Nowadays about 2000 entrants line up for the challenge that is the Victorian Audax Club s Alpine Classic. Leigh Kilpatrick said he had recently taken on the job of co-ordinator (a role shared with his partner Valerie Johnston) from previous co-ordinator Phil Bellette, "who is in fact the man who grew it from just another Audax Ride to the event it is today" and oversaw the event for the past 18 years. The 2016 event is set down for January 24. "The ride started in 1986 on the Australia Day weekend, with seven cyclists venturing out to do a 200km ride from Bright to Falls Creek and return, before heading up Mount Buffalo and back to Bright within an overall time of 13 hours 30 minutes," Leigh said. He said the event was held annually in Bright on the weekend of, or near as possible to the Australia Day weekend to get the maximum daylight hours to complete a 200km ride in daylight hours. "The event can lay claim to being the catalyst for the huge in ux of cyclists that the area now enjoys each year," Leigh said. The 2016 event will be the 30th running of the event with plenty of choice on offer for cyclists who take part. Leigh said the ride distances had been expanded from the original 200km ride "to seven distances from 60km to 320km over 11 start times allowing cyclists of all ages and experience the challenge themselves, whilst enjoying the alpine environment". Audax is a Cycling Club founded in France for cyclists wanting a challenge rather than a race and is best known for running the Paris - Brest - Paris randonnee, a ride of 1261km, held every four years and won by Sir Hubert Opperman in 1931 when it was still a race. Leigh said nine years ago, to provide a more inclusive weekend for cyclists, families and the local community, the club started the Bonjour Bright Festival. The two-day festival of food and entertainment, held in Howitt Park on the ride weekend, features a French avour to celebrate the club origins. "The ride and Bonjour Bright Festival now bring over 7000 visitors to the area each year," Leigh said. More information is available at alpineclassic.com.au. The wheels are in motion for another great Audax Alpine Classic - and a festival with a French avour.
